Tierracide — the deliberate destruction of the Earth: at once dramatic and passionate, while also painfully slow and desolate
Topopinea — a misplaced sense of longing
Solastalgia — the homesickness you have when you are still at home

As we witness the slow violence imposed on Earth’s ecosystems, we are faced with increasingly novel and complex emotional experiences that are not only difficult to place but also to articulate. These are only a few of the new words added to the vocabulary of Psychoterratic States (or earth emotions) as coined by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht. While words are a vital tool for inventing concepts around which urgent conversation and change can begin, language that is new, can often remain alien.

The first-year DAT students invite you to explore these words beyond their definitions. Over the past five months, the students have developed multi-media approaches to create emotional gateways for fourteen Psychoterratic States, sometimes inventing and adding new words to the collection.

Below is a list of terms yet to be developed visually. This is an invitation to collectively contribute to the growing list of earth emotions. Submissions are welcome via email.
