Symbiohazard ‘Topophobia’
Jurre Bakker
“Symbiohazard” is an immersive 3D environment that delves into the concept of the word ‘Topophobia’ by Glenn Albrecht. The work refers to the fear evoked in the uncanny, threatening and dreadful experiences of spaces, places and landscapes . Through the work I’ve tried to communicate the biohazard effect within a digital environment related to the word topophobia.
Central to the piece are symbiotic forms, rendered in a dark, organic aesthetic, that appear to wriggle and reach out, desperately seeking to attach to their host. These forms symbolise the parasitic relationship between fear and the unfamiliar, highlighting the often overwhelming nature of entering new or intimidating spaces. The word is created by bringing physical object through 3D scans into digital environments. The sound design supports on the visual experience that mimics the echoes through the area.
Based from my own experience, anxiety can feel like a never ending experience. Through this work I want to exhibit the role that anxiety that can take over our environmental experience.
